An ode to our erstwhile Unix web server
Work finally decommissioned it, and I feel a loss. I've been FTPing into that thing to keep my minimal web presence minimally updated for 20 years give or take. Long lost friends and family, job offers, hilariously bad spam, all found me through those pages. Most of the data from my professional life was inhaled and exhaled through that server.
I have few illusions about network software and hardware. I know it wasn't a physical machine lovingly tended by a monk working by candlelight. I appreciate having discovered Bear a few months earlier, so it was easy to migrate my pages here.
But damn, I miss that server. When you get home tonight, hug your infrastructure :).
